Using Borax to Fight AntsOne of the most annoying and common issues in the kitchen is ant infestations.
One of the most annoying and common issues in the kitchen is ant infestations. While ants can not harm us, they are a real bother and prevent us from keeping our kitchens clean for food preparation. Ants enter our homes in many different ways. One common point of entry is from the branches of trees which brush up against our homes. One of the most popular types of ants to find in your kitchen is carpenter ants. Since carpenter ants love moisture, the kitchen environment where lots of water is used is often very attractive. While you may have heard of several different natural remedies to remove ants, many of them are not very effective. Those looking to avoid the heavy use of toxic chemicals may find that Borax is a suitable and effective alternative pesticide. How Borax Fights Ants
For those that are unaware, Borax is a laundry detergent that contains boric acid in an unrefined form. This chemical is abrasive to many insects, ants in particular and can also work as a stomach poison. Borates are formed when boric acid is treated with another acid. Borates have been shown to have effective fungicidal and insecticidal properties which are particularly effective at treating ants. You will need to find the ant nest or colony and determine where the queen is laying her eggs to get the best results. While this will take a little bit of time, it will stop the problem at its source. Look at where the ants are entering the colony and sprinkle all the entryways will Borax. Also place Borax around all the areas where ants are entering your home. Common points of entry include window casings, plumbing outlets, the edges of siding and bricks, and overhead wires. You will want to be very careful about the application of Borax in your kitchen as it is a chemical. It is best to only use Borax for those external points of entry into the kitchen and always thoroughly wash your hands when you are done. You can prevent ants from returning by using natural remedies once you have completed your Borax application.
