Ant Removal and Control

Using Petroleum Jelly to Eliminate Ants

Around the world more than 8,800 species of ants have been identified.

Around the world more than 8,800 species of ants have been identified. Luckily only a small number of these species will come into our homes in search of food. Argentine ants are the most common type of ants we see indoors. These small brown ants live outdoors and usually come in search of sweets. A colony of these ants will eliminate all other kinds of ants in the area. Another common type of ant to find inside is the pharaoh ant which actually nests inside of buildings. This small light yellow to red ant is attracted to just about any kind of food. There is also grease or thief ants which often live in the nests of other ants. They resemble the pharaoh ant and are most attracted to meat or greasy food. The pavement ant makes it nest in pavement, foundations or under stones and is small, hairy and either brown or black. The odorous house ant has an unpleasant odor when it is crushed and is small and either brown or black. The carpenter ant lives in wood and has powerful jaws which can cause an excessive amount of damage to your home.

Indoor Control for Ants The most common insects to see in your kitchen or bathroom are ants. They will almost always show up in very large numbers, frantically searching for food, and totally ignoring the human inhabitants of the home. For many people the answer to an ant problem is to call their local exterminator and spend lots of money having dangerous chemicals used to get rid of them. The truth is that there are many non-toxic solutions which are effective at removing ants from your home.

Finding ants in our home is always appalling. If you watch ants you will notice that they lick everything, including each other. They actually predigest their food using their salivary glands. It is never a good idea to eat food that has been touched by ants as it may be polluted. There have even been cases in hospitals where ants have transmitted pathogens from soiled bandages to clean bandages.

Petroleum Jelly Can Help You can apply petroleum jelly along baseboards, crack and crevices inside the home to prevent the ants from entering. Filling a crack temporary with petroleum jelly can keep those pesky ants from finding an entryway. Petroleum jelly both blocks their access and makes it difficult for them to walk up walls.
