Trapping Ants with Homemade Bait

The best way to cause serious damage to an ant colony is with bait.

The best way to cause serious damage to an ant colony is with bait. The best ant bait is attractive to ants and taken back to the colony and shared with all the other ants. The goal of using ant bait is to have it eaten by the queen ant, thus killing her.

How To Make Your Own Ant Traps You can purchase ant bait at any grocery, discount, or hardware store, but they all contain highly toxic chemicals that many people would rather not use. Baits made with boric acid are much better to use. The baits with the lowest concentration of boric acid have often been proven to be the most effective. You will need to be patient and let the bait work, as it often takes up to a week to be effective. You can make your own ant bait at home by dissolving one cup of sugar in two cups of boiling water and then mixing in one tablespoon of 100% boric acid. Place a cotton ball in small plastic containers such as old film canister will holes punched in the top and then fill with the solution. Strategically position the traps along heavily used ant routes. Make sure your homemade containers contain a label so that others will know that they contain poison.

Keeping Ants Out of Trees You can use other substances to discourage ants from climbing a tree or entering your home. Some of these substances include powdered pyrethrum-silica gel dust, bone meal, diatomaceous earth, and powdered charcoal. You can also keep ants out of trees by surrounding them with a four to six inches layer of mulch which contains organic matter.

You may also want to attempt to destroy the ant colony by flooding it with water. This will cause the ants to run out, carrying their eggs with them. You can then destroy both the ants and the eggs by pouring soapy water, citrus oil, or diatomaceous earth on top of them. Another way to destroy the colony is by flooding it with boiling water.
