Removing Ants with Grits

Of all the ways to remove ants from your home, the most controversial is most likely the use of grits.

Of all the ways to remove ants from your home, the most controversial is most likely the use of grits. Many people think that the best way to get rid of ants is with grits. Grits act as bait for the ants, attracting them to wherever you place them. People have also used like substances, such as oatmeal and corn meal, for the same purpose. While this method has proven very effective on some type of ants, it will not work on all types of ants.

How Do Grits Work? It is thought that after the ants eat grits any moisture they consume will cause the grits to expand, thus rupturing their stomach. It is also thought that if the queen in the colony consumes grits she will become infertile, making it impossible for the colony to continue growing. People have tried all types of grits in an effort to remove ants. Commercial ant products often include grits as well.

Why Grits are Controversial This old custom has many controversies that surround it. One of the biggest issues has been the brutal way in which the ants are killed. Many environmentalists criticize the cruelty of this method. Many people question the actually effectiveness of using grits, claiming that there is really no scientific proof that the method works.

Conclusion The solid food that is contained in a grit can not be digested by ants. Most ants survive on liquids, choosing solid food only toward the very end stages of life. Often throwing grits on an ant colony only causes the ants to move, not die. The ants will most likely still be near your house, just in a new location you are not familiar with. Grits can also attract new insects to your home, exacerbating the problem.

Having said all that it should be clear that grits are probably not the best method to use to control your ant problem.
