An Unlikely Ant Killer: YeastAnts are powerful little insects with the ability to lift more than 50 times their own weight.
Ants are powerful little insects with the ability to lift more than 50 times their own weight. Ants are an extreme nuisance that no one wants in their home and in their plants. While ants will not damage your plants, they will farm herds of other insects such as aphids, cottony scales, whiteflies, and mealy bugs. Ants will protect the eggs of these insects during the winter and bring them out in spring when they produce honeydew while feeding on your plants. It is that honeydew that the ants are after. Killing Ants with Yeast
Add one packet of yeast to the smallest jar of molasses that you can find. If kept cool this concoction will last from four to six weeks. While this mixture is not poisonous it is best to keep it out of the reach of children. You can also use yeast as a part of an ant trap. To do this mix 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of baking yeast and 1/2 cup of molasses on index cards or some other small piece of cardboard and lay them out. You will not be able to kill the ants in the nest by using these ant traps, and it is often difficult to watch the ants slowly die while trapped in this sticky concoction. Place traps out for three days and assess your results. If you do not see any additional ants then your attempts have been a success. If more ants keep coming it is probably a very large colony and will need to increase the amount of yeast in your mixture. Killing Ants without Poison
Yeast powder mixed with molasses is a safe and effective way to kill ants. By placing a little of this mixture onto index cards you can attract and kill sugar ants in your home.
